CYCLING BASE LAYERS

CYCLING BASE LAYERS

Worn as the first layer next to the skin, a base layer should be worn all year and changed with the season, with the aim of properly regulating your temperature. From ascending snow capped mountains in scorching temperatures, to ploughing through wintry snow, a base layer is a ride essential.

Man made or a natural fibre?

Popular models can be made from either highly technical man made fabrics which do perform extremely well, or from a light weight merino wool. However, their role is the same, to either keep you cool or warm depending on the conditions whilst pulling sweat away from your body. Within cycling there is much debate over which is the better option, but rather than getting involved in that, our advice would be to wear the material you have historically preferred, and which appeals to you as a cyclist and suits the conditions in which you ride.

A word about fit

If there is one item in your cycling wardrobe who's performance is drastically affected by fit, it is the cycling baselayer. It is simply essential that the baselayer sits directly against the rider's skin where it can work to move sweat away from the body in order to properly regulate core temperature. A baselayer that is loose will simply not function. Keep it fitted, keep it working!

Craft Active Extreme Concept Piece Long Sleeve 2013
Craft Active Extreme Concept Piece Long Sleeve 2013
£37.50 £30.00
Blending the Swedish brand's Mesh Superlight and Zero Extreme fabric into one very cleverly body-mapped base layer, the long sleeve Craft Active Extreme Concept Piece is Craft's most adaptable first layer yet for cool to cold rides. In simple terms, the Concept Piece puts the right fabric where its needed, and removes fabric from where it isn't. Take your rear shoulder area for example - it gets mighty hot even in cold rides, so here, Craft applied their Superlight fabric to provide coverage without heat buildup. Switch that idea around and Active Extreme fabric is placed in key areas ...

A new name, a new product - the Craft Active Extreme Concept Piece is one of Craft's new 2012 base layer developments, one in which the Superlight fabric merges with the Active Extreme fabric (last year's Zero Extreme), creating a seriously impressive base layer that would suit the cyclist looking for a cool weather, highly breathable first layer for long, hard rides. Supremely ergonomic and body mapped to specific zones, the Active Extreme Concept Piece reveals itself on the bike to be both warm and breathable in cool conditions, making your ride fresher, and more adaptive to the 'hot/cold' ...

Craft Active Extreme Round Neck LS Base Layer 2013

Worn under your cycling jacket as the first layer, the Craft Active Extreme Round Neck Base Layer is designed to keep you dry and fresh throughout any ride in fair to cool conditions, and with its rounded neck, is an ideal choice for cyclists that don't wish to wear the higher necked crew style of the standard Active Extreme Base Layer. The Active Extreme is made of a thin, lightweight and extremely elastic fabric that is channel stitched with two high-tech polyester fibres. A hexa-channeled fiber against the skin enhances moisture transport, which cools the body down. On the outside, ...

Craft Concept Piece for Women 2012
Craft Concept Piece for Women 2012
£34.17 £23.92
Saying things like 'Next Generation' is pretty lame. However, when something like the Craft Concept Piece Base Layer arrives, you sort of struggle for any other words. Blending some of Craft's most advanced fabrics, Zero Extreme and Mesh Superlight, the Concept piece aims to map your body, so that during exercise, the right fabric is in the right place. Ok, this seems a simple enough idea, but behind it lies years of ergonomics R&D, and Craft's overwhelming desire to provide the ultimate base layer; one that not only feels soft, lightweight and breathable, but also keeps you cool ...
