I was in the market for a lightweight spring/summer gilet when I came across Cafe du Cycliste. Nothing too bulky, just enough to keep the chill off for them early 05:00 starts. Although reluctant to pay a relatively high price for a brand new to me, I wanted something a little 'different' and to avoid the mainstream brands so took a plunge. I've been using the gilet for nearly two months now and am very impressed. Firstly, it isn't your typical continental race fit, but a comfortable cycle fit none the less; shorter at the front and longer at the back. It certainly looks the part, with a neat logo on the rear at the bottom and the mesh in the middle of the back does a fine job at keeping your lower back warm, but still allowing ventilation. The zip is easy enough to adjust whilst on the move and should the temperature pick up, it is packable in a jersey pocket. Due to an unusually dry British summer so far, I can't comment on it's waterproof capabilities, but it has held off the occasional shower so far.
To summarise, if like me you don't want a typical forum recommendation on a piece of kit, the Cafe du Cycliste is worth serious consideration. Don't expect a close, snug race fit, Instead enjoy its fine design, looking equally as good up your local Strava segment as it is at your post training ride cafe stop, with a performance to do the looks justice. Finally- top class service from alwaysriding.co.uk
