Craft Zero Extreme LS Base Layer$47.36
The Craft Zero Extreme Base Layer is designed to keep you dry and
fresh throughout any ride in fair to cold conditions, ensuring you stay
dry, light and fast.
The Zero Extreme is made of a thin, lightweight and extremely elastic fabric that is channel stitched with two high-tech polyester fibres. A hexa-channeled fiber against the skin enhances moisture transport, which cools the body down. On the outside, a hollow fibre offers isolation as well as transport of moisture to the next layer, whilst CoolMax Extreme Fresh FX fabric keeps smell and odour away. On or off the bike, the fitted look of the Zero Extreme not only ensures maximum moisture transfer, but ensures that you look as good as it performs.
![]() Craft Base Layers are some of the world's most advanced, researched and tested cycling, skiing and running products. Split into into five collections – The Craft Base Layer series comprises of Cool, Zero, Zero Extreme, Zero Windstopper® and Warm collections. With these five categories, Craft offer a full range of underwear with unique performance characteristics for cycling in all climates and weathers. For 2011, Craft is the apparel sponsor for the new Team Luxembourg Cycling Project, code named 'Leopard'. Featuring amongst other internationally acclaimed cyclists, Andy and Frank Schleck, Fabian Cancellara, Daniele Bennati and Jens Voigt, this is one Pro Cycling team that will aim to win not only the early season Classics, but Le Tour in July. The website for the Leopard Project can be visited here: http://www.leopardtrek.lu/ Take a look at the Craft Base Layer Temperature Guide Chart below to see which base layer is best for you: ![]() Base layers are a bit like pants; you always have favourites that you’d look through the pile to find. Craft’s Pro ZERO Extreme is a recent addition to my kit drawer that’ll be staying right near the top. The most noticeable feature is its exceptional fit: a seamless knit, for the main body, with a huge amount of elasticity, keeping it permanently in contact with your skin, without feeling in the least bit restrictive. This is exactly what’s needed for the most effective moisture transportation and Craft’s design is superb in this regard. On a cold day, it feels warm and dry, not cold and clammy. The combination of yarns are very light and thin, which suggests it would be equally good in hot conditions too, although we’ve yet to test this. In the cold the high collar is a comforting feature, keeping out draughts, even with the top of your jersey unzipped. If you buy one base layer, make it this one. Verdict: 10/10 ![]() Providing excellent wicking and a reasonable amount of warmth, Craft's Zero Crew long sleeved base layer is the best cold-weather base layer out there, in my opinion.
The Craft top is made from 100% polyester that’s extremely soft and comfortable next to your skin, and the stretchy ribbed design means it fits snugly without any tightness, whatever your shape. Don’t underestimate how much influence that has. A base layer can only wick sweat from the surface of your skin when it’s actually touching it, so a body-hugging fit all round makes a big, big difference.
The torso is completely seamless while the raglan shoulders and the seams on the arms are flatlock stitched so there are no ridges to get on your nerves. The tail is extended so it provides plenty of coverage even when you’re stretched right out on the bike, and you certainly won’t need sleeves any longer than these – if anything, you’re more likely to find them too long than too short.
Work up a sweat and this base layer performs brilliantly, shifting moisture away from your body quickly and efficiently so you stay dry inside – and if you’re dry, you’re far less likely to get cold. Even on hard training rides when you sweat a lot, it’ll keep you feeling comfy. Of course, you can get it waterlogged if you wear too many layers over the top and sweat buckets, but it’ll still dry out fast.
In terms of warmth, Craft reckon this top is suitable 30 to 60°F (-1 to 16°C). In a long sleeve cut (a short sleeve version is available at £23), we wouldn’t be wearing it in temperatures as warm as 16°C – below about 10°C is more reasonable – but we’ve been using it on rides down to freezing point and below and stayed perfectly warm. If it gets mega cold, we just add an extra mid-layer for more insulation. In other words, it’s suitable for use in the UK from autumn right through until spring.
The only real downside is that the fabric is easy to catch, particularly on Velcro, so you have to be careful not to pull threads.
Verdict
First-rate wicking base layer for use from autumn right through until spring; our all-time favourite at a reasonable price - 9/10

If you are someone like me that prefers to have thin, lightweight layers as opposed to heavier or more smothering materials then you should give this Craft top a go. It is deceptively good at its job. I use for skiing too.

Best base layer I own for cold weather. I run hot so can wear this with a long sleeve jersey down to near freezing. Wicks very well and can wear with short sleeve jersey on autumn or spring 3-4 hour rides. Very stretchy material and tight form-fitting fit but true to size; I guess that's why it works so well.
by Vytautas Auksciunas from Lithuania on 03/12/2011
Expected more from it, as it says "zero extreme". Yes it's thin and lightweight, dries quickly, but its not warm enough at temperatures near 0. If you use it for cycling you will definitely need a good middle layer below +5 C with this.
I'm 178 cm and M is OK for me.

Fantastic piece of essential clothing. I bought this for my boyfriend and also bought one for myself apart from looking like something from a 70s knitting pattern ie his and hers matching arran sweaters we both think they are absolutely brilliant. Great to use for cycling with another thin windproof on top and also a great item for camping, packs well and you can get away with wearing it for a few days before you move on to the next one (I suggest buying 2).
by Christopher Walters from United Kingdom on 28/03/2011
Very lightweight and extremely comfortable. The stretch fabric gives a great fit, even for a 'fuller frame'
Will probably buy a couple more.

The only base layer I rely on - I wear this all year round and it is very comfortable, fast wicking / drying and helps maintain a good body temperature. It's stretch fit so no baggy areas and it's also quite long in the body (good for cycling).
Impressive service and delivery from AR too!

One of the best base layer I used till now. Warm but not to warm with a perfect fit.
by Kelvin Southan from United Kingdom on 02/01/2011
I've always been a fan of Craft clothing and this base layer is no exception. it's a great layer to add either on the bike or off. It looks good and feels great on. You can't beat having a quality base layer and this product is just the ticket when layering up. It also looks great, it's a shame that it gets covered up!!

Craft zero extreme base layer .This base layer is well worth the money.I wore it in the recent cold snap under a jumper and body warmer .Makes sub zero conditions a breeze.Thank you Always Riding
by Juri Mezzani from Italy on 29/12/2010
It does a good job at keeping you warm, I used it only for running now. I got a M and I'm 180 cm., it was the right size for me.
by Daiox from United Kingdom on 02/12/2010
Excellent base layer. Fit is spot on - I needed a smaller size than indicated by the Craft sizing chart, chest size, because the larger size was too long in arms and body. I am 103cms chest, but Med is perfect fit with no folds, which I think is important for a base layer. [no problem with return/xchange]. As others on this site have found this garment functions well down to v low temps and layers up well because of its excellent wicking properties. Previous fan of Helly Hanson - for me this is much better, and feels better to wear. Others have found it snags easily - just use a wash bag in the machine and no problems.

Husband already had one of these and wanted another (got it for his b'day). Fantastic item, does exactly what it says! Best internet price and delivered within 2 days of ordering! Great Service! Highly Recommended!

I already have the short sleeve version of this top and I love it. The l/s one is just as good: Super thin, but very warm. I wore it this morning under just one long sleeve (Rapha ;-)) top and it was super toasty even in sub zero conditions
by Richard Swart from China on 20/11/2010
Very comfy base layer. I got the XL as my measurements are not typical for a cyclist - 5'8" with 44" chest. Vest is a bit long, but fits very comfortably - nice to have a long tuck-in! It's extremely warm - I sweat copiously and this seems to cope pretty well - we'll see what happens in the variable weather we're experiencing. Seams are very good - no rough spots or irritations.
by Blackhound from United Kingdom on 15/11/2010
I have worn this for a few rides recently as the temperature has dropped and it has proved to be warm edition to my wadrobe under a softshell jacket.
The sizing is quite long in the body and sleeves in my medium sizing so anybody tall will enjoy this feature. Recommended.
by Matthew Soley from United Kingdom on 30/10/2010
As per the other reviews a great base layer - nice and toasty and soft. I am 6'1 and 42'' chest and wear a large. I would say that I find I can't hang around too long in it if I have been out working up a sweat. I have layered it up with breathable (Craft) jackets and found that stopping off even for just 5 minutes has left me feeling a little damp and subsequently cooler - if you are on a constant session i.e. long/short ride with no stops then ideal; if your club run stops at 30 miles for a cup of tea and a cake before finishing your last 20 you may experience this chill as I have. Or, maybe you won't and it's jsut me?! On the whole though it's pretty much up there.
by EddieB from United Kingdom on 13/10/2010
Have only used this a couple of times so far but is actually too warm to wear around if you're not outside. Did 50 miles on Sat in it when all the other riders were in tights, I was just in this and shorts and was comfy, if not a little too hot, but it seems to wick away moisture really well, so never got sweaty. Would definately recommend
by Vladimir Vernikovski from Belarus on 04/10/2010
It's just amaizing thing! Imagine that you have the second skin that you can put on. It keeps body warm and dry all my 65 km long way. I use it from 15C and lower. Actually I don't know lower temperature limit. I tried it on 10C the last weekend with Light Performance jacket and it was good.

The Craft Zero Extreme LS Base Layer is the best underwear that i ever had. In ths cold weather you feel warm and dry. Great Item.
by Alexis Marchand from Belgium on 18/04/2010
Very nice product. Warm, anti-sweat, good looking at a nice price.
by Thomas Ashford from United Kingdom on 22/01/2010
The base layer is one of the best I have used. It keeps me nice and toasty when it is cold outside, and does a great job of wicking away sweat and keeping my skin dry. Only downside that I find is that it is quite long so I have to fold it over, but it is not much of a problem.
by Fox from Ireland on 20/01/2010
The Base Layer is warm without being restricting. Ideal for running, cycling, rowing and other endurance sports which material must wick away sweat.
by Argiris Mokios from Greece on 17/11/2009
Very nice product. Does exactly what it is supposed to do. It expels sweat from your body, forming a layer of moisture in the outer surface of the garment and vaporizes into the air. Unfortunately, it seems that I ordered the wrong size because the sleeves are a little bit short (I am 181 and ordered medium). Other than that the fit is really great.
by james mcloughlin from United Kingdom on 15/10/2009
Not been subject to extreme cold yet but first impressions are good. Ordered a small and it fits perfecly, I would normally be a medium in most other tops. Keeping me warm during autumn and it doesn't feel wet if you sweat. All in all a very good base layer.
by Darren Suffolk from United Kingdom on 07/04/2009
I never ever think of using anything else. This is just a superb top!

Hate to say it but yet another good value and fabulously performing product from the chaps at Craft. I bought these on the strength of a review on Road Cycling UK. Apparently Craft have been making base layers for 30 years and it shows. Fit is tight but not like you are being suffocated when you pick the pace up and start breathing hard. They are relatively long so if you're not wearing bibs they don't ride up your back. Shame they don't have a zip for those sessions when you really push it on the turbo. Got an in depth product question, or want to ask something else related to this product? Whatever your question, simple post it here, and we'll answer you faster than a speeding bullet.
Hi
I want to buy one of these, but unsure re size.
I am 173cms tall, chest 103cms.
Many thanks
David

Thanks for the question - I would say that a large would be ideal based on your chest size, although it will be a little generous on the length. However, on a cold weather item, especially a craft base layer, this is not necessarily a bad thing.
Does the white & black have the shaping on the bottom at the back as shown on the night sky?
posted by Sandra on 20th September 2011
Thanks for the question - yes, they certainly do. I think it is a case of over zealous photo shopping by Craft, but they are indeed the same:)
