DZR Strasse Shoe

$160.63
With a mix of full grain leather and a classic herringbone fabric, the DZR Strasse harks back to an earlier time of pocket watches and Fedoras. Like the entire DZR Shoe range, the DZR Strasse combines an SPD compatible midsole with a vulcanised rubber outsole for a seamless bike to pavement transition throughout the day. Loss of power transfer to the pedals is one of the main reasons you probably already wear a traditional cycling shoe to commute over a more urban orientated piece that you can wear off the bike, so to combat this problem, DZR moved the sole's flex point further back towards the rear. The net result is a natural walking gait as the shoe can move with the foot. But on the bike, more power is delivered to the pedals throughout the pedal stroke. Finished with a 600 luminosity reflective rear badge, the DZR Strasse Shoe is an ideal city riding piece for both on and off the bike adventures, for the rider that only wants to wear one shoe throughout the day.

DZR was born out of the passion for riding, period. The US brand's path stems from a lifetime riding every discipline from dirt to concrete and terrain all over the globe. Their life is the bicycle, a place where they feel at home, and it is with this nomad lifestyle and dedication to product design and development that led this young company to create DZR Shoes for urban cyclists everywhere. The concept of DZR shoes was born in the Swiss Alps and it is the answer to a simple need - that of balance in life both on and off the bike. Once opened, print it out, then follow the simple instructions to create your sizing chart: DZR Shoes Size Chart ![]() I kind of wanted to keep these under wraps, they are that cool. DZR Shoes you can chill in, ride in and go to the bar in and not feel like a ponce. Lovely soft comfortable leather with a vulcanized waffle like sole. Oh and don't forget this fashion and functional piece has a nice deeply recessed hole for your SPD cleats. As well as collaborating with Mission Workshop on their new urban shoe, DZR were at Interbike showing their new range of urban cycling shoes. Founded by a couple of experienced apparel designers, DZR shoes combine an SPD compatible midsole with a vulcanized natural rubber outsole and handsome uppers to make for some very appealing urban cycling shoes. ![]() Bike commuters face a dilemma every morning: Wear stylish-yet-inefficient street shoes, or suffer in stiff, ugly bike shoes all day. The third option, lugging an extra pair to work so you can have both power and panache, is a less-than-attractive compromise. Shoe startup DZR has changed that equation by crafting some great-looking, comfy kicks that conceal SPD-compatible cleats. The versatility allows you to make nice with your clipless pedals without straining your feet or your fashion sense. Clipless pedals let riders lock their feet to a bike for a more powerful and efficient pedal stroke. Clipless pedals are safer and far more productive than toe cages. But they also require small cleats on the bottom of the shoe in order to clip on to the pedal. In addition, bike shoes have stiff soles for efficient power transfer. For obvious reasons, because of the stiffness of the shoe and the bottom cleat, bike shoes are a drag to walk around in all day. DZR’s new line of shoes is an attempt to reconcile the bike shoe with the street. It’s been done before, but rarely has it worked so well. A hollowed-out section on the bottom of the shoe conceals an SPD cleat (not included). Meanwhile a nylon shank in the sole provides more stiffness than your average sneaker, while remaining flexible enough to walk comfortably. We even ran around in them a bit without noticing the rigidity — although we wouldn’t exactly want to jog in these things. They were fantastic on the bike, clipping in and out easily, with a noticeable stiffness on the up and down pedal strokes. Yet they’re also extremely comfortable to wear and damn good-looking. The Strasse model we tested has a skate shoe cut, with herringbone tweed uppers and black accents. The logo on the heel doubles as a reflector when light hits it, which is great for night riding. Don’t want to walk around in your cleats? Swap them out with the screw-in rubber covers shaped to fit the exposed section in the sole. Unless you revealed the piece of metal embedded deep in the sole, no one would know these are bike shoes. Yet, like all compromises, they’re not perfect. In order to remove the rubber plug in the bottom of the shoe to install the cleat, you have to slice it out with a knife. It was easy enough to do, but also seemed like a good way to lose a finger. We think the shoe ought to come with that bottom section already removed. Also, the cleats tend to touch the ground in a noticeable way on concrete and (worse) hardwood. While you can remove them and replace them with the rubber covers, we expect most people would consider it too much of a pain to do every day. Overall, however, these innovative and fashionable kicks make a great combination that will look just as good on the bike or at the bar. Just don’t get trashed and try to ride home, OK? WIRED: Concealed cleats make shoe easy on the eye and the ride. Nylon shanks provide more stiffness than Chucks, without going full-on Lance. Rear reflector is discreet during day, lights up like a Daft Punk show in car headlights. Men’s and women’s shoes available. TIRED: You want us to slice the bottom with a knife? The only way we want to cut rubber soles involves a Beatles album and a turntable. http://www.wired.com/reviews/2011/01/undercover-kicks-let-you-pedal-or-hoof-it-in-high-style/ If you have bought this product, why not write a review and help other riders to make an informed choice. No more no less comfort than in a pair of Converse, flat insole (ie. no foot-arched) / this pair of plain and stylish shoes gives you enough comfort to be worn all day long in city / the sole is flexible and the shoe is wide enough so you don't get pain when walking / not waterproof nor repellent / too fragile for touring

Started to look into casual shoes for commuting/city riding as got really tired of packing a pair of shoes all the time. Just ridden first time with my new DZR Strasse shoes - very nice, very comfy, size for me spot on - could do with a lace tuck on the drive side shoe, not as stiff as I thought they might be whilst pedalling but close enough, but certainly comfortable to walk in - as ever this is a compromise between proper cycling shoes and chucks/sneaks. I like 'em though and now will ditch the winter boots as it's virtually Spring is it not? (hope springs eternal). One thing to note: You'll need a sharp Stanley or craft knife to remove the in situ rubber piece that covers the cleat area - this for me was pretty stressful and difficult (I hate knifes) but got there in the end - be careful!!

my second pair of dzr shoes i bought... i have a pair in 44 (my normal size) and a pair in 45 and both feel good, i do have to say that one size bigger (the size 45) does feel a bit better. Finally urban shoes that don't look like cycling shoes but do act like them when you are on the bike, don't expect racing quality stiffness because they aren't that stiff but for normal to fast city cycling they are more than great! I do hope they will make more models in future!

fantastic shoes and do exactly what they say - a decent stiff cycle shoe and good for the day with jeans or whatever.

Having used straps for cycling for years i wanted to try out some clip-less peddles. The DZR Strasse Shoe was my choice after some research. First impressions are they feel exceptionally well made, they also look fantastic - they look great in the photos - but when you actually have them in your hand YOU really appreciate the design, look, feel and style. It is easy to fit the clips into the sole of the footwear, took me twenty min max (first timer with doing this). They clip in solidly with the M520's that i am using and provide a definite upgrade to straps, providing a solid secure feeling of being connected to your bike, enabling a far more efficient revolution to the pedals and crank. For me these DZR's really come into there own when powering up hills. They are equally competent when you jump of your bike at your destination instantly transforming them selves into stylish walking footwear (for me a great compromise between stiffness for riding and suppleness for walking). All in all a fantastic product and i will almost certainly be purchasing another pair. Got an in depth product question, or want to ask something else related to this product? Whatever your question, simple post it here, and we'll answer you faster than a speeding bullet.
Hi,
two questions:
1. Is the edge of the sole black or white (the pics show both!)
2. Have you had reports of the sizing coming up large or small at all?
Thanks,
Ben

Thanks for the questions - the outer is black, I believe the rear shoe in the photo is just to show the cleat area - maybe DZR didn't have the same shoe with the cleat exposed for the photo.
Regarding sizing, if you base your decision on the fit of a normal Converse / trainer style shoe that you might have at home, not a typical slim fitting cycling shoe, then you should be fine.
Hi, just a query about the DZR Strasse shoes. Do you have them with a black sole, as they\'re shown with both black or white soles (on your site and others).
Thanks

The Strasse shoe only comes with black sole. The photo is showing a white sole in the background but this is from another DZR shoes. The only reason was to show the SPD compatible midsole so the photographer used the first shoe that had available. It is quite confusing actually!
Probably a stupid question, but do i have to buy the cleats separately?

Thanks for the question -Â Yes, the cleats would normally come with your pedals, allowing you to attach them to your footwear of choice. The DZR Shoes come with the necessary fixing plate pre-installed in the sole, so all you need to do is to cut the rubber protector away, then mount the cleats provided by your pedal supplier.
