Dan Martin wins Liège-Bastogne-Liège, with a little help from Castelli

Becoming the first Irish rider to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège since the legendary Sean Kelly last won this Belgian 'Monument' in 1989 is no small feat, but that's exactly what 26 year old Garmin-Sharp rider Dan Martin achieved last Sunday in front of an enthusiastic flag waving finish-straight crowd.

Wearing his favoured Castelli Climber's Jersey and Inferno Bib Shorts finished in custom Garmin colours, Martin made an early move to avoid a sprint showdown he knew would not play to his strengths. Nobly assisted by team-mate Ryder Hesjedal, who set a high pace to keep the selection of 6 safely away from the chasing pack, Martin rode into the final kilometre with only Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez and a pointy-nosed Panda for company (see the video), before turning on the after-burners and shedding El Purito with a last-minute burst of strength to take a well-deserved victory.
