CYCLING SUNGLASSES

CYCLING SUNGLASSES

On a sunny day, wearing a pair of sunglasses on the bike is always a good idea. However, don't think cycling sunglasses should only be worn when it's sunny, as UV light can cause eye damage even on seemingly dark or cloudy days. Aside from keeping harmful UV rays at bay, cycling sunglasses should also be worn for basic eye protection. Riding a bike at speed causes all manner of debris to race towards you, from bugs to dirt, so whether cruising in the sun or barreling down a hair-raising descent, cycling eye-wear is pretty much essential.

Which pair is best for me?

Choosing a pair of biking sunglasses doesn't need to be difficult, and like other accessories and indeed cycle clothing, you just need to make sure that the pair of cycling sunglasses you eventually purchase suit both your riding style and face shape. Look out for comments in each product page to this effect, and you should soon be rolling with a smile and (hopefully) the sun on your face.

The Lens

Like mainstream sunglasses, cycling sunglasses have gone through some serious development in recent years, and are now available with a number of technologies, from photochromic (what brands might typically call 'light adaptive' or 'transition lenses') to polarized or condition specific tinted. The way to decide which type is right for you of course is to once again look to your riding style, regularity, terrain & climate to decide which properties and indeed shape the lens should have. For example, road cyclists would usually prefer a more wrap-around lens with a bigger arc and a thinner frame. Trail riders or city commuters on the other hand, or indeed any cyclist in a less aggressive position on the bike, might look for something a little less racy with a more traditional shape.
