A lot of apparel companies are making a run at Performance Casual styling--breathable, wickable, cycling-cut clothes that don't make you look like a Tour de France wannabe. Hincapie Sportswear, founded by American cycling icon George Hincapie, has made a near-perfect leap into the fray: The 100 percent Merino wool G-Coat is a double-take-inducing jacket that, thanks to armpit gussets and slightly long sleeves, also functions as a durable and comfortable staple for committed bike commuters. The slim cut is flattering to the typical cycling physique, and the two rows of buttons are cleverly backed by a hidden two-way zipper (under the storm flap) that securely tightens the garment for riding. The collar can be buttoned high to keep out wind and water.
There are three minor issues: Though the jacket is comfortable across a wide temperature range (and, in our experience, warm down into the high 30s) it doesn't block wind. This is not a problem in moderate temperatures, and on cold gusty days all this means you should layer. Also, the sleeves hang open, allowing in wind and water--another inconvenience easily overcome with the proper gloves. Finally, the two pockets in front are hand warmers, which is cool in terms of styling, but an additional, hidden zipped pocket somewhere, even one just large enough to hold a wallet or mobile phone, would have added functionality.
None of these quibbles are a reason not to buy the G-Coat. It's a fantastic-looking, versatile combination of styling and performance--so much so that it apparently caught the fancy of Patrick Dempsey, who besides being an image-conscious celebrity is as core of a cyclist as it gets, and who reportedly begged Hincapie for one of the first to be made. You might never look as good as Dempsey, but at least your commuting coat can be dreamy.
