Wearing a baselayer all year round is a great idea, as it will keep you dry, comfortable and cooler than if you were riding without one. Add a really cold day though and a baselayer is more than just a good idea - it's utterly essential. Nothing wicks like merino as it adapts to your body temperature, helping you to stay cool on the climbs and warm on the descents. An added bonus is that because merino is naturally anti bacterial, you can ride and ride even if you forget to wash it, because you aren't going to smell.
