![]() Based in the UK, SealSkinz® have have neatly solved the problem faced by every cyclist who rides in the rain; that of cold and wet hands and feet. Thanks to their patented membrane system, SealSkinz® socks and gloves are fully wind and waterproof, yet so completely normal to the touch that you would think nothing special was going on at all. How does it work? SealSkinz® socks and gloves use a type of membrane called hydrophilic ("water loving"). Hydrophilic membranes are totally solid, without pores. It is therefore physically impossible for droplets of liquid water to pass through the membrane, however, it is breathable because water vapour molecules are transmitted from molecule to molecule through the membrane on the polymer chain and expelled on the other side. The driving forces are the differences in humidity and temperature between the atmospheres on each side of the film. The internal climate, next to the skin, is hot and humid because the body is generating heat and moisture as it exercises. The external climate is much drier and cooler. Consequently water vapour is driven from the inside of the garment to the outside. As the foot gets hotter during an activity, so the film becomes more efficient at expelling moisture. Testing, testing.. SealSkinz® know that riders need confidence in their equipment, that is why every single SealSkinz® product is tested before it leaves the factory, with the sock or glove mounted onto a machine which subjects it to water pressure. If any product leaks, the item is rejected and diced. Every SealSkinz® product is therefore guaranteed to be 100% waterproof. The waterproof film can withstand 10psi of hydrostatic head pressure, the equivalent of a column of water 700cm high standing on the fabric surface. This is 7 times the level required to meet European Standards for waterproof clothing. If you have bought this product, why not write a review and help other riders to make an informed choice. I bought these socks for wet autumn/spring and cold winter rides. So far they have been waterproof and durable. They are quite thick and therefore require more space in your shoes than your average riding socks. If your shoes are not big enough, these socks can not provide optimal thermal insulation. I have oversized my winter riding shoes and can cope with these socks for 2 hour rides in -20 C. For the late spring/early autumn they might be even a bit too warm.

A unique winter sock that can handle quite some conditions. I have ridden with them in -10 C for over 2 hours without any frozen toes. With winter shoes and rubber covers.
The waterproof ability is definitely not 100%, though. I have run through them several times after long rainy rides.
But the temperature and technical quality is top notch.

At a glance, quite a lot to splash out on one pair of socks. However, if like me, you believe in you get what you pay for, then these socks fit right in. Like a lot of cyclists sticking their training miles in throughout the winter days, the cold played havoc with my feet/toes, to the point where things became uncomfortable and sore even when off the bike. Anyway, since taking the plunge and trying these socks (after trying a few cheaper and not so well designed socks) I have been glad to find on returning home from 3-5 hour long rides in temperatures below 0deg, that my feet have remained DRY, COMFORTABLE and my toes are WARMER - no longer falling apart because of the cold chill.
Take notice though, I obviously had a sturdy overshoe to go with these socks, and had to wiggle my toes every now and then to keep blood supply to my feet (but this is not a problem for everyone). But I know from looking at my feet post-ride, they would be in a terrible condition if not for these socks.
All in all, if your feet are vulnerable to cold/wet conditions moreso than the average rider, these are THE socks! (I'm considering SealSkinz gloves now to give me hands the same luxury on long winter rides!)

"I have made two orders from Always Riding, I think, and there has been no problems whatsoever. But the nicest thing has been that when I've asked something from customer service, I have gotten the answer very quickly. That is certainly not the case with most web shops." read more >
