Despite being the ‘entry level’ model of the Speedplay Zero, the Chromoly version still rocks in the performance stakes, well ahead of competitors. To meet the lower price point the pedal spindle is made from chromoly, which looks a bit less flash and adds a bit of weight compared with the Stainless Steel and Titanium versions (4g per pedal compared with the stainless steel and 23g per pedal compared with the titanium). Like the other two models, the Speedplay Zero Chromoly now comes with the walkable cleat as standard, for an equally good on the bike experience but an easier off the bike experience than the standard cleat.
Speedplay Zeros are a great option for a range of riders - if you’re looking for a new set of clipless pedals and don’t need a recessed cleat there are many reasons why the Zeros might be one to consider. Many riders find Zeros the most comfortable pedal/cleat combo out there - the cleats can be adjusted in three different axes independently (fore-aft, side-to-side and rotational) and the amount of float (foot movement) can be adjusted to suit your needs exactly - from no float to any amount of float within the 15 degree adjustment range. The rotational float is particularly welcomed by riders who have had knee issues, as it provides a much more forgiving pedalling motion.
The Zeros are also popular among performance-oriented riders, including the pros - many Grand Tours, Spring Classics and other race calendar regulars have been won on Speedplay Zeros. On Zeros you can position your foot closer to the pedal spindle and continue to pedal into tighter corners, enabling you to transfer power more efficiently and consistently. The dual sided pedal allows you to clip in quickly and easily to get a headstart on others - this is also great for start-stop urban riding, touring (where getting clipped in quickly is massively beneficial when on a well-laden bike, especially for hill climbing) and much in between.
Speedplay Zeros have three high quality precision cartridge and needle bearings in each pedal - more than the two found in most other pedals. Other elements which really reveal the attention to detail and quality of the pedals are the use of metal for the locking edges of the pedal and the cleats (some alternative brands use plastic which is less durable) and the built in grease port which makes it easy to keep the bearings and spindles running smoothly.
