Walz's redesign of their hugely popular ear flap model includes elastic in the back flap to help keep the flap down and your ears warm. The ear flap cycling caps are handmade from quality, durable 100% wool, whilst the soft bill liner is comfortable and flexible and can be worn either up or down.
Walz Caps now offers two sizes. The original "one size fits most" size is now the small/medium. The new size is a large/extra large for those who prefer a roomier fit.
![]() Handmade in San Diego, USA, Walzs' traditional style cycling caps are made from durable, comfortable, medium-weight fabrics and are both stylish and functional. Their unique four panel design offers clean lines for a snug cap that fits nicely under a cycling helmet. ![]() Cotton cycling caps serve a dual purpose: protect the scalp from the heat and rain, and help the rider look good off the bike. California cap makers Walz Caps succeed in both categories, and have taken it one step further with the use of different materials and cuts for a refined and hip look. According to owner Michael Gilstrap, Walz Caps is a small family company with the singular focus of making quality cycling caps in the United States. "Concentrating on producing the best cycling caps allows us to create a superior product that is popular around the world," he told BikeRadar. Walz Caps models range from the traditional four-panel to racing stripe and earflap cycling caps. Sizes are small/medium (6-1/4 to 7-1/8 hat size) and large/XL (7-1/4 to 7-5/8). Our two samples fit generously and continue to hold their shape after several months of wear and washing. This was a welcome change from the dozens of European-made caps we've worn over the years, which routinely come in one size only, are too snug for most and fade after the first washing. I bought this hat because I wanted one to fit under my helmet and still cover my ears. The one I was using looks like a medieval monk's cap with helmet off and various beanies have been too warm. This hat works very well and doesn't look bad off the bike.
I have no problems with it being itchy when damp or wet but I'm desensitised to wet wool by virtue of being a soldier when they were still issuing woollen battle dress and underwear.
The minor problem I have is that I have a Take-A_Look mirror mounted on the helmet and the brim of the cap intrfers with it. Flicking the brim of the hat upward under the helmet clears the mirror but makes the headband a little tighter. It is only slightly uncomfortable but with the brim down I'm hardly aware that I am wearing the hat.

I bought this cap because I wanted some winter headwear that would provide adjustable warmth and keep the rain off my glasses. The foldable earflaps and peak make a reasonable job of doing this. The downside is that the hat can become persistently damp and somewhat itchy if it comes into contact with moisture, such as sweat or rain. The Belgian styling of the hat is certainly sartorially interesting and I have found this hat more suitable for off the bike wearing.

I like a good cap and I've got loads of them to prove it. This cap is one of my preferred ones. The peak is just right (strangely its just that bit firmer and shorter than the Racing Stripe cap which I also own) and it covers your ears in a very snug way. The only issue is that it slightly gives you the appearance of Ena Sharples from Coronation Street when she wore her hairnet as the elasticated back of the cap bunches up just a tad too much to be called stylish. However, with a little gratuitous tugging and pulling I've managed to stretch the elastic just a little so that I'm now less "Ena" and more "vaguely stylish"-or so I tell myself! All in all a good cap and suitable for cold conditions when you need your ears kept warm. Got an in depth product question, or want to ask something else related to this product? "I wanted to buy red bib shorts and a red jersey for a September charity ride. It is a 300 mile ride and the second day is a dress red or red dress day. I saw the two items on the alwaysriding web site (directed by facebook) and I ordered the same. I followed the size chart..." read more >
