Description

A great looking new helmet from Bell aimed squarely at the roadie market, the light and breezy Zephyr is the result of years of R&D followed by extensive real world testing. Described by Bell as its most advanced road model ever, the Zephyr incorporates several innovative design features to enhance the fit and protectiveness of the helmet, leading to a lid which is really comfortable, adjustable, ventilated and protective.

The Zephyr boasts a features list which is filled with a lot of ‘nice to haves’ as well as all the key ‘must haves’, but the main things which distinguish it from alternatives are its use of Progressive Layering Technology and its Float Fit Race fit system. The Progressive Layering Technology is a patented helmet shell design which uses two different densities of EPS foam (softer on the inside, harder on the outside) so that if the helmet was involved in an impact, energies would be managed more dynamically. This bifurcated body design also saves weight compared to similar systems and enables larger air vents to be used.

The Float Fit Race fit system is incredibly customisable, to the extent that you can adjust the lateral position of the rear fit pad on either side of the helmet independently. The main adjustment point on the fit system is a dial adjuster at the rear but you can also adjust the fit system vertically, with 22mm of vertical adjustment possible. The fit system is called Float Fit because the dial sits slightly away from your head, eliminating pressure at this location.

The Float Fit Race retention system is also where you’ll find the MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) layer, which provides protection from rotational impacts in the event of a crash. The Zephyr is the first helmet which has incorporated MIPS into the fit system, and this streamlined approach makes a lot of sense - according to Bell, the Float Fit Race system makes the helmet fit feel a lot more natural and reduces bulk.

Other comfort-oriented features worth mentioning are the eighteen large vents which ensure really good airflow through the helmet, lightweight straps which lay flat against your head (these also improve aerodynamics) and the antibacterial padding which extends to a tab in front of your face, meaning any moisture which accumulates will drip off the helmet in front of your face rather than onto your eyewear or into your eyes… nice! The helmet also has sunglass guides at the front and rear so you can easily take your sunglasses on or off whilst riding. If you’re looking for a helmet which will be very comfortable and airy and has one of the most advanced designs in terms of protectiveness, the Zephyr is certainly one to shortlist.
