Steadfast, functional and a sometimes steamy stable-mate, no we're not talking about a Shire horse, we're talking about cycling socks, a cycle apparel category which has sometimes been seen as an unglamorous wardrobe necessity (a workhorse if you will). But have your feet ever felt in need of a hug after a long ride? Or have you felt an urge to partake in the ‘sock doping game’ which has swept the cycling world?

Chrome No Show Merino Socks - a great pair of cycling socks if ever there was one
Not called 'no show' socks for nothing! You can just about see these beautifully comfortable socks from Chrome Industries, which are ideal for urban riders. Made from Merino wool, they keep feet nice and fresh all day

A while ago I experienced a revelation in relation to my riding. Having ridden a bike for years in the city, on the road and off it, I had never bothered to wear proper cycling socks. However, I have come to appreciate that good socks are well worth their weight in wool (or your chosen combination of man-made fabrics). A good pair of cycling socks are like the icing on the cake when it comes to comfort in the foot area, helping regulate temperature and preventing any rubbing, digging in or chafing. If you've already invested in a good pair of shoes for cycling and created the dream pedal set-up on your bike, perhaps a pair of great cycling socks is the next step to even more comfortable feet whilst out on the bike.

My favourite sock discovery is the use of Merino wool, which makes socks a delight to put on (especially when my feet are cold or tired); add a pair of shoes and it actually feels like your feet are being hugged – I did not realise that socks could be improved with the addition of shoes! An added bonus with Merino is that it needs washing only infrequently because of its seemingly magical antibacterial properties. We have a great range of Merino socks in stock suitable for road, trail and city riding. Because Merino is naturally thermo-regulating, socks made from Merino can be worn in both warm and cool conditions.

I have also discovered that a well-designed lighter weight sock can greatly enhance what is an already very comfortable shoe when riding in warmer conditions. A good technical lightweight cycle sock greatly aids air circulation in the foot area, giving hot feet more of a chance to breathe and quickly wicking any moisture away. Cycle-specific socks are designed to avoid any bunching or movement once on to prevent hot spots or blisters. They also tend to be reinforced in key areas to prevent premature wear.

I feel like feet are oft-overlooked when thinking about cycling (I know that until recently I certainly didn't give them the attention they deserve), maybe because they don't change or improve through experience or training like other parts of our bodies. If you haven't already discovered the joys of good socks, I would implore you to invest in a good pair and experience the positive impact they can have on your quality of life for yourself - whether you choose them for their technical qualities, eye-popping designs, or a combination of the two.

We stock a range of socks suitable for all seasons - delve into our collection and treat your feet with something neat!
