Description

Styled for a race cut, the Showers Pass Skyline Softshell is a waterproof road cycling softshell perfectly suited to wet, windy days, when an adaptable, feature-rich cycling jacket can make all the difference.

Tailored with an off-set front zip finished with an easy reach puller and comfort enhancing zip garage, the Skyline sports a waterproof front chest pocket, and dual side invisible zippers on call to aid breathability. Welcome 360 degree low-light reflectivity runs from wrist to wrist, whilst zippered cuffs which allow for a more aerodynamic fit complete the arms. At the rear, dual deep-reach pockets, one of which sports a handy light loop, offer ample space for snacks and supplies, complemented by a zippered third pocket for valuables. A zippered neck vent completes the jacket.

I bought this to replace an old Gore softshell that I have lived in for the last five winters. On balance I am not very impressed by the Skyline jacket.

There are some good points: It looks great - I have the red colour and it is very visible. The jacket seems well put together and so far has been as waterproof as I'd hope for from a softshell. Breathability is not bad too.

However, the cut is very odd indeed. It is advertised as a race cut and it is nicely fitted, but the body is very short at the back. This also means that the pockets at the back are both quite shallow and quite high up, so hard to access and hey don't feel very secure. There are lots if vents, but they are not terribly effective; the vents at the front just make the jacket billow, but don't seem to scoop in much air- especially if you have a bag on your back for commuting. The unique vent on the back of the jacket is tiny and seems to do nothing.

The zipped sleeves help to get a snug fit around the wrist/forearm, but have an annoying tendency to open themselves, particularly when you have gloves underneath. It would work better if there was some kind of port for the closed zipper to rest in. Which brings me to the worst problem of all: the main front zip has a two way zipper. Why??? It starts to unzip itself when your are on the drops with the result that the open zip starts to munch on your shorts. In the space of two 40minute commutes, it has chewed a hole through the front of a new pair of tights - in a very conspicuous place in the groin! I don't understand who'd ever want to unzip a cycling jacket from the bottom up? I am scratching my head as to how to fix he problem by retrofitting some kind of zip port- or maybe even replacing the zip altogether.

There are better softshells out there - especially for this kind of money.

I'm 1.9 meters and 69 kg, and was looking for a light, but waterproof jacket that didn't flap all over the place. The Skyline isn't packable, but is light. It feels really well put together, looks fabulous and the vents kept me cool enough on a ride that warmed to around 15C. After some advice via email from Pete at AR I went for a medium and it's perfectly snug and with arms that are actually long enough! It's a tad short at the back, but I'll take that over flapping like a split spinnaker any day. If it would only rain so I could test the waterproofing, this could be a five star review.
